GulfQuest is the first museum dedicated to the American Gulf Coast’s rich maritime traditions…and only the third interactive maritime museum in the world.

Located in Mobile, AL, GulfQuest is the culmination of teamwork among corporations, foundations and individuals. GulfQuest officially got off the ground in the year 2000 when the City of Mobile announced plans to move forward with plans to feature GulfQuest as the centerpiece of Mobile Landing, with a scheduled opening in late 2014.

GulfQuest will be housed inside a 90,000 square foot structure shaped like a vessel headed out to sea. On the north end, a large globe protrudes through the roof, representing the Gulf’s connection to the world. On the south end, GulfQuest’s “bridge” adds to the building’s nautical look – and serves as home to a high-tech interactive exhibit.

In addition to GulfQuest, this structure will house a ferry terminal with passenger service that links the Mobile waterfront to other Mobile Bay locations.

Visitors to this maritime museum will be treated to interactive exhibits and multi-media content. Explore the Gulf of Mexico by stepping on board a full-size replica of a container ship, docked inside GulfQuest…ready to leave port.

GulfQuest presentations will include early settlements and trade routes, marine archeology and shipwrecks, Gulf animal and plant life, weather and hurricanes, marine and coastal environments; maritime commerce and shipbuilding, ship navigation and communication, offshore oil/gas platforms, and much more.

Among one of the early successes to bring maritime history to Mobile in 2007, GulfQuest worked with the Lighthouse Association to install a new exhibit at Mobile Regional Airport that showcases a lantern room identical to the one that once sat atop Middle Bay Lighthouse in the center of Mobile Bay.

The lantern room serves as the exhibit’s centerpiece, and is surrounded by kiosks that provide airport visitors with details on the lantern room, Alabama lighthouses, the Alabama Lighthouse Association, and GulfQuest.

GulfQuest’s ultimate goal is to inspire youth to pursue educational opportunities and careers in maritime research and industries that are vital to the Gulf Coast.  From the view of Mobile Landing today, GulfQuest appears to be living up to its goal.
