Going Coastal

Moonlight in the Gardens, Corpus ChristiBy Cheryl McCann

Gardens created with white, pink, lavender or yellow silvery, gray variegated foliage seem to glow in the light of the full moon. Moonlight in the Gardens is not a new concept. Centuries ago in China, having meditation in moonlight in the gardens was quite common. Only since the Nineteenth century have moonlight gardens become popular in our country.

Moonlight in the gardens presents nature’s magical plant display of reflective blooms and soft light colors, accented with moonlight everywhere. It provides a space for tranquility and relaxation. A breeze blows up on this fall night as you are walking along a path and your sense of smell is awakened by fragrant foliage in this magic moonlight in the gardens.

This is the setting for a romantic fall evening at South Texas Botanical Gardens’ Moonlight in the Gardens 2012. South Texas Botanical Gardens is a gem in Corpus Christi found along the Oso Creek at 8545 South Staples. It has had mentions in the Dallas Morning News, Texas Monthly, Texas Highways and San Antonio Express News.

Expect Moonlight in the Gardens 2012 to be a relaxing and fun-filled fall evening with entertainment by Milky Way Piano Bar, interactive Butterfly Release in the screened Butterfly House, and music and dancing to Flashback, a multi-decade rock band. More than 150 items will be included in the Starlight Silent Auction.

Guests love the laid-back atmosphere, visiting with friends, the delicious food and drink, and observing the moon and other astronomical sites through a telescope. Returning guests unanimously said, “Please bring back those Texas Roadouse cooked-on-site steaks!” On the menu are Stellar Spirits wine, margaritas and beer all evening along with appetizers and dessert.

Moonlight in the Gardens 2012 begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening, October 26. Attire for the evening is anything from denim (faded) to sequins with comfortable shoes! Open seating is $85 per person for members and $100 for non-members. Reservations are required. For additional information, call 361-852-2100.

Helping make Moonlight in the Gardens 2012 a success are its General Chairs Cindy Boudloche, Polly Harris and Shirley Mims. Underwriting and sponsor opportunities are available from $150 to $10,000.

Moonlight in the Gardens 2012 honors Rich Tuttle, Flint Hills Resources’ aced Botanical Gardens Regional Director Public Affairs, who retires this year. The company’s generous donation to the Botanical Gardens in 1998 built its beautiful Rose Garden – catalyst for the Rose Pavilion and other fast-paced Botanical Gardens exhibit development which followed.
